Letter from the Editor

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the principles of sisterhood, scholarship and service. These are the building blocks we use as the foundation for our beliefs.  Our sisterhood is composed of strong, educated women who bestow love and support to all. We are committed to improving ourselves as well as the community around us. The women of Delta Sigma Theta are continually striving to educate the public on issues affecting the global community, from the AIDS epidemic to the political arena. There is no issue too great or too small for us to tackle.

In this issue of The OQ, News for You we will highlight the happenings of the Omicron Omega Chapter at Texas A&M University.  OQ is constantly making headlines with our innovative programming and community service projects. We will continue to work hard for Delta and for our community! DSQ

XI LINE: Spring 2K2

Greetings!!!  I would like to introduce to some and present to others Omicron Omega’s newest chapter members, Xi Line, also known as Organized Chaos. The Omicron Omega Chapter now has eleven more hardworking Sorors in the chapter.  On Friday, April 26, 2002 in Zachry Lobby at 7:13 p.m. they revealed themselves to Texas A&M University’s student body.  Their probate was eye-catching and crowd pleasing. Xi Line’s performance kept the student body talking for days!

On Saturday, they participated in their first Delta Playday. Our eleven new initiates worked diligently to make Playday a success.  At 4:00 p.m., there was a reception held for them where they were showered with gifts from Big Sisters and friends.  The day did not stop for them here, at 9:13 p.m. the chapter Sorors threw a party for them at the Lincoln Center where they strutted the night away!

Coming from the Dean, it was a pleasure, more so an honor, to bring in Xi Line.  I would not trade my experience for the world.  I know in my heart that these eleven young women will keep the Omicron Omega traditions alive, and more importantly, they will also WORK HARD FOR DELTA!!!  DSQ

International Day of Service

Once again Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has taken a stand and found a wonderful way to reach inside of the global community to educate and defend. The International Day of Service was dedicated to bringing awareness to the AIDS epidemic that is growing globally.  The Omicron Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. collaborated with the Brazos Valley Area Alumnae to lend their support to the cause in their local area by collecting canned goods and monetary gifts for the Family/Aids Services of Brazos Valley.  Kroger Grocery store was grateful enough to allow solicitation outside of their most visible branch in College Station.  Sorors met outside of Kroger at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday March 9, 2002 and solicited customers until 2 o’clock that afternoon. Monetary gifts ranged from as little as .75 cents to as much as 20 dollars.  People came away from their own shopping giving from one can to several bags and boxes full of cans.  Every gift was warmly received and literature containing AIDS facts from the Center for Disease Control was handed out.  A nice monetary sum was raised and a total of 132 canned goods, 13 dry goods and 6 miscellaneous items were collected and donated to the food pantry for AIDS Services.  DSQ

Delta Playday 2K2

Every spring Omicron Omega hosts its annual Delta PlayDay, a day of fun and physical activity for college students and Bryan-College Station youth.  This year’s event, held at the Lincoln Center, was a huge success.  Students and children alike came out and participated in arts and crafts, field sports, and relays.

The atmosphere of PlayDay was that of your old school elementary field day.  Games and relays such as kickball, egg toss, and balloon pop reinvented the spirit of childhood play for many college students.  PlayDay participants enjoyed a meal of hotdogs, sausage, hamburgers, cake, chips, and cookies.  Also, snow cones seemed to be a hot commodity, as they couldn’t be pumped out fast enough for swarms of people looking to beat the heat.

With the sun ablaze, the day inevitably ended with a much-

needed water fight that rendered many a soppy mess. J  Omicron would like to thank all that donated time and funds to the success of PlayDay 2002.  We extend a special thanks to local businesses and the staff of the Lincoln Center.  DSQ

Diva Day

After a very long and hectic weekend, the Devastating Divas of Omicron Omega relaxed with a day of fellowship, food and fun on Sunday.  Decked out in our Sunday best we all gathered and fellowshipped at Living Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Butch Smith.  Reverend Smith is a very dear friend of the chapter and has conducted several bible studies on various occasions for us.   The message for the day came from Jonah 4: 1-11.  The topic was Drive Friendly: He's Acting like a Big Baby.  We concluded the service, by joining in and singing several spiritual hymns.

Following church, the divas gathered and went to Cheddar's. We enjoyed a great meal and a plethora of laughs.  We laughed at the old and new stories everyone told and joked about things that happened each of us in the past.  We had a lot of fun together as we fellowshipped.

After everyone had finished their meal, we said our goodbyes and left to go home and prepare for the upcoming week by studying, napping, and planning our next get together!  DSQ

The Sorors Show An Attitude of Gratitude…The Big Event!

On March 31, 2002, the entire Omicron Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. took part in Texas A&M University’s Big Event!  Established in 1982, The Big Event is a one-day service project that enables Texas Aggies to show its appreciation of the Bryan/College Station Community.  With 470 assignments and the help of 5000 students, an exhausting day of gratitude was displayed as many of the campus organizations completed tasks such as cleaning for the elderly and renewing landscaping.  Though community volunteerism is a daily phenomenon for Omicron Omega, this day was

unique because we were able to fellowship with other students whom also believe in simply giving back to such a supportive kinship. The women of DST along with the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. were able to show their indebtedness by adding a fresh coat of paint and new life to a family’s lovely home.   DSQ

December 10, 2002 Wind down for winter break!

This year we kicked off Playday Weekend 2002 with a very entertaining and informative game show entitled "Weakest Link." I'm sure we have all seen or heard about the real show that comes on T.V. with the very sarcastic and serious host whose catch phrase is "Good-bye!" For our version of the show we asked a series of questions to six contestants, many of which were campus leaders and other Greek affiliates. The questions were relevant to the theme of Playday, which was 'Breakin' into 2K2', pertaining to the late 70's and 80's. Questions related to hip-hop culture, popular television series and much more.  The host, played by Soror Christine Randolph, was very entertaining for she mocked the actual host with a series of sarcastic comments with a very stern demeanor. Each round a contestant was eliminated. During the final round, the two remaining contestants competed for a grand prize. We even had "commercial breaks," which we used to publicize for the rest of Playday weekend. During the breaks we set mood for the show by playing old school music, favorites such as Salt 'n Pepa and Biz Markie. The show was a success! The audience was packed and was really feeding into the show. Neither the contestants nor the audience members went home empty handed. We gave everyone a special prize for participating and supporting. This program was an excellent start for our Playday weekend and as the weekend continued, it just got better!
